Which iPhone is for me?
Apple’s current line-up of iPhones runs from its flagship 7 and 7+ through to the still impressive yet smaller SE.
iPhone 7
The 7 is Apple’s latest mid-sized phone and its most popular current device. The design has very impressive speed improvements, longer battery life than the 6s, a totally new and improved camera system (including OIS), a new home button and much better speaker system. There are also two new colours; Black and Jet Black which both look fantastic, alongside Gold, Silver and Rose Gold from before.
The elephant in the room: there’s no headphone jack. If you really need one then don’t buy this phone.
The 7 is a phone that will last you at least 3/4 years if you are minded to keep it for that long whereas the 6s will only last another 2 or 3 in my opinion.
If you can afford it, you are looking for a mid-sized iPhone and you are progressive in your attitude to technology then the 7 is my recommendation.
iPhone 7 Plus
The 7 Plus shares a feature sheet with the 7 and the main differences are as follows:
- It has a much larger screen at 5.5″. I recommend that you handle one in store to see if this size is appropriate for you.
- It features dual 12MP cameras for Optical zoom and special portrait camera effects.
- It features 3GB of RAM, more than in the 7, this will level the playing field and help to power the larger screen.
- Longer battery life. Featuring a larger battery, the 7 Plus will outlast the 7 or any other iPhone with ease.
If you’d like a large-sized phone then I recommend picking the 7 Plus.
iPhone 6s (Review)
The iPhone 6s is still a great phone, this year the entire line-up has been kept. You can pick any of the 4 colours and in two great storage options, 32GB and 128GB. The 6s was a powerful phone when it was released last year, it still is. iOS 10 flies on it and it will continue to run iOS well for at least another 2 years, maybe 3.
If you choose a 6s this year you’ll get a great phone at a great price, but don’t expect it to last more than 3 years.
iPhone 6s Plus
Unlike my recommendation last year not to pick up a 6 Plus, I give no such caveat here. If you’re looking for a larger phone which is powerful and stylish, the 6s Plus is still a great phone. Due to only having 2GB of RAM it may only last 2 years rather than the 6s’ 3.
If you choose a 6s Plus this year you’ll get a great phone at a great price, but don’t expect it to last more than 2 years.
iPhone SE
If you prefer a small-sized iPhone then the SE is your only choice. With totally updated internals in the still-popular package of the 5s, the SE offers good value for money. The iPhone SE has an A9 chip like the 6s offering 2x CPU and 3x Graphics performance, can use Apple Pay and has access to faster LTE bands. It also shares the impressive camera system from the 6s but not the improved FaceTime HD Camera. It also comes in every current colour available and from recently is now available in 32GB and 128GB capacities.
Recommended if you are in the market for a smaller or cheaper iPhone with powerful technology. It will only last another 3 years.
